How to recruit the right board members

A well-functioning board is more than the sum of good individuals. It requires the right composition of competence, experience and perspectives — something easily overlooked when board members are recruited through one's own network alone.

Here is a simple framework for more structured board recruitment:

1. Map the current board

Start by assessing the competence already around the table: industry experience, financial competence, international experience, board experience and personal dynamics. What gaps should a new member fill?

2. Define the requirement specification concretely

Avoid a generic list of requirements. Describe the specific experience, competence and qualities the organization needs right now — and in light of the strategy ahead.

3. Search beyond your own network

The best board candidates are not always the most easily available through the owner's or management's own network. A broader, targeted search increases the chance of finding the right person, not just the nearest one.

4. Assess in a structured way, not just on gut feeling

Structured interviews, reference checks and, where relevant, a conversation about the board's working methods contribute to a more objective decision-making basis than an informal chat alone.

5. Plan the introduction

A new board member needs good onboarding to become effective quickly — set aside time to get to know the business, the strategy and the board's working methods.

For owner-managed and family-owned companies this is especially important, since the board often has to balance the owners' long-term interests with the need for independent sparring. Read more about how I work with board search for this type of company.
